Harrogate - 2005
Meeting at Tamworth services early on Friday afternoon 5 of us headed off up north in convoy for the Kit and Car Builders Show at the Harrogate showground. This show is a personal favourite of mine mainly because of the beautiful location and because it always seems to be one of the best social gatherings of the year, it's not really a big show, although it is growing year by year and has a huge catchment area so it should have a bright future.
Upon our arrival we were soon joined by a number of members who all mucked in to get the club stand set up, help that is always most appreciated so thank you to those that helped to either help set up or pack away after the show. On the Saturday we had a Canterra on the stand for the first time in many years. It was the first time I had seen one in the flesh and I couldn't quite come to the conclusion whether I liked it or not, I suppose it's best to say the styling is somewhat unique! A little like a squared off and elongated Capri perhaps? The Canterra was brought to the show on a trailer but was virtually ready for its MOT, could this be the only Canterra on the road at the moment?
The weather on Saturday was grim, it rained all day, but we still had a good turnout of cars and members. Mark and myself went out to have a look at a local steam railway for a couple of hours in the afternoon just to get in the dry for a bit before returning just in time to get the BBQ going and the drink on the go.
The Jago Owners Club seemed to have invented a rather unusual form of entertainment, revving their engines flat out from stone cold, valves bouncing, popping, banging, flames etc. for quite extended periods just to see who's car was the loudest using a decibel meter someone had on a mobile phone! The funniest thing about it was that it was the club's "Technical Secretary" that started it all off and thought it was a good idea!????? All I can say is don't take any advice from him!
By about 2 am the 10 or so of us that were still up started to get a fair degree of hassle from a man who was absolutely plastered, luckily he was on the other side of the perimeter fence as he was becoming very abusive and threatening violence. He was trying to tell us that he owned the showground and that he would get his management to come and sort us out, total rubbish of course but he was drunk enough to believe it! The response from one of the members was "Well if you own the land, why is it you are out there and we are in here" classic! He kept saying he was going to climb over the fence but when you can hardly walk what chance have you got of getting over a 7 foot barbed wire topped fence? After putting up with his abusive and threatening manner for quite a while I decided to contact the site security who was also threatened with violence when he confronted the man, at which point he then called in the police and the drunkard was subsequently arrested.
All the action certainly made for an interesting evening to say the least, we returned to the club tent and continued trying to kill off our livers until somewhere around 4-5am, I can't remember, but there were certainly some sore heads on the Sunday!
A nice dry day brought out a few more members and the show on the whole was busier. I thought the selection of trade stands was a little poor this year, although that meant I didn't buy anything so it did me a favour in a way! But hopefully that will be improved on next year along with a mini auto jumble and some evening entertainment on the Saturday perhaps? These are all things myself and others have suggested to the organisers as feedback which they were most interested to hear so you never know!
