Llandow - July 2005

In an attempt to make it to Llandow and get the tents up at least sometime before dark for once, Nick Chick and myself set off mid afternoon on the Thursday for the clubs annual track day. After an unplanned sightseeing tour around the South Wales coast, very nice by the way, as a result of taking an incorrect turning we arrived at the campsite at around 6pm to be greeted by one or two other members who had already set up camp. After pitching the tents we set off on foot to the as we found out later to be the not so local pub. (The comment "It doesn't look far on the map" was made at some point, but then neither does Australia!). After a decent meal and a couple of pints we retired to the campsite for a few more beverages before some shut eye in readiness for the following day's excitement.

Up nice and early and straight round to the little café at the circuit for a full English breakfast before the circuit briefing, a mixture of serious information and a bit of comedy as always and after signing on it was time for the first cars to head out on to the circuit. Mark Young was to lead a group for the first few laps round at a steady pace allowing people that hadn't been to the circuit before to follow and get a feel for things before leaving them to there own devices.

For the second year running the weather was to be against us, third year lucky next time??? As rain persisted throughout most of the day but it didn't stop people from having fun. Aidan Potter took me round for a few laps in his Melos proving that he had done a good job of putting his new engine together and I was well impressed by the level of grip provided by the Falken ZE 502 tyres he has fitted considering the poor conditions, no doubt helped by his smooth driving style. I had to feel sorry for Roger Barr who at the Newark show a couple of weeks previous had purchased a second set of wheels for his car. He then went to the quite considerable effort of getting some slicks fitted to them and then building a box trailer to get them to the circuit, the trailer was pained in a blue and yellow two tone scheme of course to match the car, but the weather meant all his efforts were in vain! You could guarantee that if he had brought a set of wets instead that it would have been dry! Graham Boulter brought  his dad's stunning Kudos along instead of the B+ for a baptism of fire, having only been completed the night before, but unfortunately suffered an electronic water pump failure after only a couple of laps.

One or two had graceful spins on to the grass or took the escape route at the chicane having out braked themselves but no harm was done to any cars or bodies during the day thanks to the reasonable amount of run off at the Llandow circuit. One member lost an exhaust which would have resulted in a noise ban at most track days, but not at Llandow! One of the circuit staff just said "doesn't matter, you just have to speak louder when he goes past!" The circuit manager was full of praise for the club and said to me after the event that he was impressed by the standard of driving throughout the day with no silliness or dangerous overtaking attempts and that he always looks forward to the DOC attending.

Once the track action came to a close at 5pm many of us headed back to the campsite for a BBQ and alcohol consumption into the small hours, taking much appreciated cover under the awning of Kelvin's motor home from the intermittent showers. On the Saturday morning the few of us that remained had breakfast again in the circuit café and had a look at another track day that was in progress. There were a couple of bike engined cars going round that were seriously quick, every time I see one I start getting all sorts of daft ideas about putting one in the B-type, maybe one day…

I'm pretty certain I can say that everybody had enjoyed themselves, despite the poor conditions, and I'm sure many of them will be back next year, hopefully to be joined by more of the clubs members, hint!

Next years event is booked for Friday the 7th of July and places cost £75, second drivers £35 and as always passengers are free. Deposits of £20 (sent to myself, Secretary, to the address in the inside front cover) are required to book your place and we are limited to a maximum of 30 cars to be able to run an open pit lane format so best to book early to avoid disappointment! An open pit lane track day (go on and off track whenever you wish with no time limit) for £75 has to be a bargain and it is, for sure, a fun day out! Mike Solloway
