Annual testing days at Llandow Racetrack - July, 2000

This was our twelfth year at Llandow in South Wales and it was helped by a couple of days fine weather between the rain and also the fact that the track had been repaired with the potholes in the far loop having been filled in so that it was a nice smooth track and better than it has been in many years. For those of you who stayed away due to the fact the track has been getting worse then you made a big mistake.

On Friday we had 15 cars who all stayed for the Saturday when they were joined by another 9, not large numbers but slightly better than last year. These were made up of 12 Phaetons, 3 Melos, 1 Malaga/B+, 1 Legerra, 2 Sylva Strikers, 1 Fisher Fury, 1 Locost, 1 Robin Hood, 1 racing TR7, and 1 racing Astra. For those of you there early on Friday you had a chance to see Peter Lloyd (of Peter Lloyd Rallying) speeding a Metro 6R4 around for an hour.

As usual rather than hear what fun we had while you stayed at home I expect you want to know the carnage report for the few days. Contrary to the usual rumours most people do not damage their cars. But for those who did here’s the list:  Bodywork wise little damage apart from one Phaeton spoiler cracked as a result of hitting tyres, the rest was bodywork leaving cars: bonnets from a Melos and a Sylva, and a Melos rear bumper complete with lights. Other damage was tyres -with the TR7 flat spotting a slick through the canvas!! One tyre coming off a rim, deflating and the revised course resulted in a bent steering rack mount (levered straight so play could continue) followed by a holed sump (replaced from the local scrappy). Then there were the usual engine problems: overheating, water pump seal going (hole in pump replaced with plastic metal), water in carbs (steam cleaned tank) and Ford fuel pumps. This may sound a lot but the cars were fixed and carried on thanks to the local scrappy and motor factors. In the end only one car was RACed home (the rest raced) due to a faulty fuel pump. Fortunately once again no one hurt themselves and the St John ambulance crew were able to listen to the Wimbledon tennis commentary uninterrupted.

Away from the track the evenings were spent at the adjacent caravan and campsite, with full facilities, where we have cheap rates and a corner reserved for us. Several barbecues were held and drinking ensued, and some people ventured out to nearby pubs were meals could be prepared for them.

We intend to return next year for another couple of days fun. The track owners have said that they intend to resurface some of the track to fit in with their plans as having it as a track which can be used for testing, so hopefully it will be even better. So let’s look forward to some more cheap fun next year and hopefully we will get more of you along.
